Science Fantasy

Mikael Svensson is the last human in existance, as far as he can tell. The Enemy that sent his tiny ship hurtling through space has destroyed three planet outposts and Earth, leaving only the distant Terra Nova as a possibility. No longer able to teleport, Svensson hibernates during his 2000 year trip to discover if humanity still lives. What he discovers is a planet reverted to iron age technology and a religion based on the Goddess under the mountain and the Enemy above, still attacking the planet's automated defenses after 2000 years. The story then devolves into a quest as Svensson crash-lands on the planet, meets the three Argindells, and begins to seek out the Goddess.

Terra Nova is strongly inconsistant in tone and skill: sometimes the pacing plods, yet other times the story strengthens into a classic quest reminiscent of Robert Jordan's work. Overall, this pattern implies a role-playing source or style, but the world Williams has created has the potential to be stronger than that, and the story is certainly more character-driven than many quests. For fans of strong female characters, there are a few of those as well, perhaps more than in many traditional fantasies. Overall, Williams seems to be improving over the course of the book and will probably continue to do so for the next few novels. Don't look for powerful themes here, but if you like fantasy/scifi crossovers, this book deals with that aspect very well.
